1,4-Butanediol is an organic substance belonging to the class of dihydric alcohols, which is a lubricant oil without color and odor. For some manufacturers, 1,4-butanediol may be called butanediol, 2-butyne-1, 4-diol, however this is a synonymous name for the substance and will not have any effect on the chemical characteristics.
Formula 1,4-Butanediol: C4H8 (OH) 2
Molar mass: 90.121 g / mol
CAS Number: 110-63-4
Transparent lubricant liquid of 1,4-Butanediol has no odour or colour, but has a slightly sweet flavour. On interacting with water, the compound gets mixed with it, forming homogenous consistency. Full dissolution is achieved upon reaction with ethane or acetone. Partial dissolution can be observed in ether compounds or chlorobenzene. On interacting with acids, it is able to form esters.
Organic compound is stable to moderate exposure to sunlight and elevated temperatures. Boiling temperature is 230-235C, and self-ignition is achieved at 350 degrees. Undergoing dehydration at a temperature of 200C, the compound is capable of forming gamma-butyrolactone. Being in a room where the temperature is below 14C, 1,4-butanediol transforms into a solid form.
The compound is not toxic for humans, but can cause slight irritation in places of accidental contact with the skin. It is necessary to take into account possible individual intolerance in humans, working with the compound. To protect yourself from any allergic reaction you are required to use a variety of protective equipment. At lease you should wear rubber gloves and respirators.
Chemical compound is quite stable and able to withstand large degree changes, however, you should not leave containers with compound in rooms with elevated temperatures and penetration of direct sunlight. To prevent unauthorized fire the compound should be stored in a cool and dark place with no access to sunlight. The most favourable will be special rooms for storage of chemicals with moderate humidity and compliance with the temperature regime.
And although with a sufficiently long compound storage it is possible to have some clouding of the solution, there is no need to worry – chemical properties will remain the same.
In the form of raw material 1,4-Butanediol can be found in the production of polyurethanes, in particular in the shoe industry. Also often butanediol is one of the main substances that is used in the production of different types of paper, cosmetics, tobacco, cellophane, textiles, because it produces the necessary solvent for these goods tetrahydrofuran. In pharmaceuticals 1,4-Butanediol is a compound that takes part in the synthesis of drugs and other medications.
